There are four competitions in the 2019-2020 FIDE Women's Grand Prix. The top two players with the total points of the Grand Prix will be eligible to participate in the 2021 Women's Chess World Championship Candidates.
Previously, this season’s FIDE Women’s Grand Prix had three races at Skolkovo, Monaco and Lausanne. Due to the global outbreak of the new crown pneumonia, the fourth leg was originally scheduled to be held in Sardinia, Italy. The game was forced to stop.
There are two Chinese chess players-Ju Wenjun and Zhao Xue, shortlisted for this women's Grand Prix. In the previous competition, Ju Wenjun participated in Skolkovo and Lausanne stations. Zhao Xue participated in the Monaco station. She originally planned to participate in the Lausanne station. However, due to the restrictions of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, Zhao Xue failed to play and chose to retire.
According to the plan, both Ju Wenjun and Zhao Xue will compete in Gibraltar. However, it is still uncertain whether it will be possible.
It is reported that the Women's Grand Prix will be arranged at the Caleta Hotel, the permanent hotel of the Gibraltar Open. During the Grand Prix, in order to ensure the safety of participating players and avoid the risks related to new crown pneumonia, the hotel will be closed for management. During the game, the hotel will not accept any other guests except the participating players and the organization team.
